For lecturers

SoWi?So! supports students both directly through concrete offers to students and indirectly through the support of teaching staff and study offices. On these pages you will find our offers for lecturers who would like to get involved, educated or network in (international) university teaching, as well as for the Student Affairs Offices. Special target groups also include new lecturers and visiting academics who are looking for contact with students or who would like to offer entire courses (e.g. as part of a staff exchange).

Teaching successfully

Materials for your teaching and counselling

Our study guides offer lecturers support in advising students and in teaching the basics of academic work. You are welcome to forward the guides, link them, integrate them into your course or use them as a template for your own materials.

Guides in German can be found if you switch to the German version of this site. We also welcome feedback and suggestions for improving our guides. If you see a need, please feel free to make students aware of our full range of support services.

** So far, this information is only available in German. English versions will follow soon.

International Teaching

Further education in the field of international teaching

Taught in English - Certificate for International Teaching Skills is a programme of the faculty in which international teaching and lecturing competence can be acquired and proven. Our lecture series CRiSS - Contemporary Research in Social Science is part of this programme.

Research at the faculty: CRiSS - Contemporary Research in Social Science [summer term]

CRiSS is a recurring lecture series of the Faculty 02: Social Sciences, Media and Sport of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz and takes place every summer semester. Members from all disciplines of the department - communication studies, education, political science, psychology, school science, sociology and sports science - present their current research projects. CRiSS Guests

Analogous to CRiSS, in "CRiSS Guests" guest researchers are invited to present their research to students. CRiSS Guests is designed to give students the opportunity to get to know guests at the faculty and their research, to network internationally and to get an impression of lecturers at universities that might be considered for a study visit abroad. The format is currently still being planned.

To be announced (TBA): Space for extra-curricular courses (e.g. given by visiting academics or team-teaching opportunities).

Courses that are not anchored in the curriculum can be offered at the department level. The courses are aimed at all students of the faculty or, depending on the wishes of the lecturers, at all students of the JGU. It is up to the institutes of the faculty whether they wish to recognise individual courses as curricular credits.

There is room for:

  • visiting researchers (e.g. within the framework of a staff exchange)
  • external doctoral candidates who would like to gain international teaching experience (paid teaching assignments are possible in principle)
  • innovative teaching projects (e.g. international teaching cooperation) that cannot (yet) be anchored in the regular study regulations of a subject.

To get an impression of what kind of courses we offer, you can find an overview of our past seminars and lectures here. Read more

Networking and more

Networks

There are currently two networks at the faculty, which are coordinated by the SoWi?So!:

Further networks are being planned. If you would like to exchange ideas with colleagues from the department on a particular topic, please contact us: sowiso@uni-mainz.de.

Support for student offices

SoWi?So! also provides the student offices with helpful materials. Service Management also provides helpful materials for the study offices. For example, there is a guide to course registration during the introductory week, and students can also find out what studying at the department means and what they need to bear in mind as first-year students at the SoWi?So! introductory events,

In addition, SoWi?So! supports the Student Affairs Offices by continuing to offer ad hoc counselling, e.g. in the event of problems during the course of studies or before the final module examination. Various events and courses expand the portfolio of the department.

PhD Representatives at JGU

The DoV is a representation elected by the doctoral students of all departments, consisting of 21 members. As an official body of the University of Mainz, they have a say in various committees, especially the Senate, various Senate committees and the departmental councils. They advocate for the interests and needs of doctoral students and work closely with the Gutenberg Nachwuchskolleg (GNK). As DoV they accompany some projects within the university and deal with them critically. Read more
